The Elafiti archipelago consists of 13 islands which
can be found between Dubrovnik and the peninsula Peljesac.
They got their names by the Greek who were the first
that settled there.
The word “elaphos” means “deer“.
In the 11th century these islands got under the rule
of Ragusa and rectors were sent on the bigger islands
Lopud, Kolocep and Sipan. In the 15th/16th century the
Dubrovnik nobility discovered these islands and used
them as their summer residences. Nowadays the locals
still come to these islands if they need silence and
recovery – and surely tourists like them, too!
